Roulette rules in two minutes

1. You choose a chip value and place it on the layout: on a number, between two, on a row, on a column or on an even-money bet (colour, odd/even, high/low).
2. When betting closes, the ball spins in the opposite direction to the wheel and lands on a number.
3. Bets covering that number are paid according to the payout table; the rest lose.
4. In French roulette, if 0 comes up, even-money bets get half back (the "la partage" rule) or are held "en prison" for the next spin; that lowers the house edge to 1.35% on those bets.

Every bet on European roulette has the same house edge; what changes is the variance. A straight-up bet can multiply your stake by 36 or lose it 36 times out of 37; red or black wins almost half the time. Choose based on how long you want your budget to last, not on a "better" bet.

Live variants worth understanding

• Lightning roulette (Lightning Roulette and similar). On each spin, one to five numbers get multipliers of up to 500x. In exchange, a normal straight-up bet pays 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1. The house edge stays close to 2.7% on average, but variance rises sharply: you lose more often and win bigger when you hit a multiplied number.
• Auto roulette. No dealer, with a mechanical launch and faster spins. Same edge.
• Spanish-language roulette. Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live have tables with Spanish-speaking dealers. Same rules; minimums are sometimes slightly higher because there are fewer tables.
• Double-ball roulette, extra prize wheels, "immersive" roulette. Payouts vary; read the table info panel first.

Betting systems: why they do not work

• Martingale (doubling after each loss): a run of eight straight losses on red or black happens roughly once in every 170 attempts, and by then the required bet exceeds the table maximum and, probably, your balance.
• D'Alembert, Fibonacci, Labouchère: slower versions of the same thing. They change the shape of the loss curve, not its average.
• "Hot numbers" and "trending sectors": on a well-maintained wheel, every spin is independent. The statistics the table displays are decoration.

Roulette and bonuses
