Blackjack rules in two minutes

• The goal is to score higher than the dealer without going over 21.
• Cards 2 to 10 count at face value; J, Q and K count as 10; the ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever suits you better.
• You get two cards; the dealer gets one face up (and, in the American variant, one face down).
• Your options: hit (take another card), stand, double (double your bet and take exactly one card), split (with two equal cards, play two hands) and, at some tables, surrender (get half your bet back).
• The dealer makes no choices: they hit up to 16 and stand on 17 (at some tables they hit soft 17, which is worse for you).
• A natural blackjack (an ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards) pays 3 to 2 at the right tables.
• Insurance: a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace. It is a mathematically bad bet; do not take it.

Why table rules matter more than luck

Two blackjack tables with the same name can have very different house edges. These are the rules that matter most:

Basic strategy: the chart that cuts the house edge to the minimum

Basic strategy is the mathematically correct decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up card. It is not a trick: it is the result of calculating every possible combination. This summary version works for multi-deck tables where the dealer stands on soft 17:

Variants and side bets: what to avoid

• 6 to 5 blackjack: the reduced payout on a natural blackjack. Always avoid it.
• Blackjack with side bets (Perfect Pairs, 21+3): the main hand is normal, but the side bets carry house edges of 3% to 10%. Play them only for fun and with small amounts of money.
• Infinite Blackjack and "six-card Charlie" tables: special rules that change the strategy; read the info panel.
• Blackjack Switch, Free Bet, Double Exposure: rules that look like gifts (swapping cards, free doubles, seeing both dealer cards) are offset by others that cost you (pushes lose, blackjack pays 1 to 1). The house edge is similar to or worse than the classic game.
• Tables with no visible rules: if you cannot see what a blackjack pays and what the dealer does on soft 17, do not play.

Blackjack and bonuses: watch the rollover
